For the last few months I've been working on writing a contemporary score for Maya Deren's Meshes of the Afternoon for my dissertation. I've learnt so much from this experience, learning about early twentieth century film theory has really broadened my own perspective on contemporary music. Scoring a silent non-linear surrealist film, presented some challenges for example maintaining a sense of continuity but from this experience it also enlightened me to how revolutionary Deren was for her time. Her works are so contemporary, even viewed today, and writing a score that complements these elements in this day and age was achievable due to the works timeless qualities
